I'd have to agree - safety first and tires are critical to that. The best tire I found was the Metzeler Interac M5 in a 110/70/17 but, they should not be done singly, they should be done in pairs. If you can still get the M5, it's the one to use.

Yup. It's not 'normal' but with the narrow rims there's not a lot you can do. The M5's have extra belts in them that lend themselves quite well to the task. Once more, it's not something you want to do one at a time and it's important that the tire is pretty rigid.

One option that I am considering is the Michelin Gazelle M62. Good traction for sand, and an excellent brand.

I would use 2.50-17 (or 2.75) front, and 3.00 rear. The 2.25 is probably too skinny for the front.
